2024 So Far
0 Wreaths so Far

We thank our Bakersfield Police Department's Chief Greg Terry for his support and encouragement in this huge endeavor.  He led by example as he volunteered by placing wreaths on December 16, 2023. We could not have done this without his support!  We also thank our BPD's staff and the numerous volunteers who responded to our call for help.  When the trucks arrived on December 15, 2023, we had a couple hundred volunteers ready to unload the trucks.  We worked like a well-oiled machine and it was done in about an hour! On December 16, 2023, we fully covered our Bakersfield National Cemetery's 7500 graves with wreaths in about an hour due to the army of volunteers!  On January 13, 2024, we had a large number of volunteers who responded to dispose of the wreaths and again the task was completed in less than an hour! It was impressive and gratifying to see this type of kind-hearted people volunteering--all for our veterans!

Here we are in 2024! We are overwhelmed with gratitude to the BPD's staff and the people of Kern County who again were extremely supportive of our veterans!  We set a goal of 1000 wreaths and we currently have 1,315!  Thank you all for your generosity! Thank you!

Please join us at Bakersfield National Cemetery on December 14, 2024 at 9am for the Ceremony then laying of the wreaths at 9:45am.

PLEASE READ THE WREATH LAYING PROCEDURES PRIOR TO ARRIVING AT THE CEMETERY.  THANK YOU!

1. Receive the wreath and approach the headstone.

2. Extend the wreath outward, offering it to the veteran.

3. Place the wreath centered at the headstone, with the bow at the top.

4. Say the veteran's name aloud.

5.  Please do not remove items already placed on headstones, such as wreaths, flowers or other tokens left by the family or friends.

6.  For military and cadets--render a slow salute or place a right hand over your heart.

Ceremony and Volunteer Information

We are happy that you are willing to help with our Wreath Across America ceremony at Bakersfield National Cemetery (BNC). This year's theme is to 'Live with Purpose' and please do not forget to register to volunteer! That way you will get all updates about the cemetery itself.

Here are some things to remember about the ceremony:

  • Everyone of all ages and backgrounds is welcome.
  • Join us for a brief ceremony at 09:00 am at the Upper Assembly Area; transportation will be provided.
  • At 9:45 am, volunteers may commence laying wreaths.  Please help ensure that all participants get the opportunity to place a wreath.
  • Family and friends of veterans who sponsored 'grave-specific' wreaths will check in at the BNC's Public Information Center and will be the only participants allowed to lay a wreath between 7:30 am - 8:45 am.
  • Please follow the location coordinators instructions on where to place wreaths, as well as "how" they should be placed.
  • We especially appreciate volunteers willing to help clean-up. Our wreath 'Clean-Up Day' is scheduled for Saturday, January 11th at 9:00 am.  Please check in with the location coordinator if you are interested in helping with the clean-up.

The most important thing to remember is to have a wonderful experience participating in the ceremony. Thank you so much for your help in achieving our mission to remember, honor and teach the next generation about what it means to serve and live with purpose.
