These days he wears a military uniform Monday through Friday as a project manager. But for the first sixteen of my twenty years “in,” MSgt Nitta turned a wrench as a vehicle mechanic. One of many memorable service notes, he left Balad on his 27th birthday, November 3, 2004. While Master Sergeant Niotta's stay proved brief and happened so long ago, it still impacts his life to this day. Jerry continued service sharing the love of Christ in his community by way of the Christian Motorcyclists Association from the early 80s until July 10th, 2020 due complications from the COVID-19 pandemic. He is survived by his 5 children, 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. James passed away of natural causes at 78 years of age. James joined the Navy Jan. 22nd. 1962 and honorably discharged Jan. 21st. 1968. When he discharged he was an E-3. A member of Seal team one. He served 2 tours in Vietnam. As a SEAL, James took part in the Splashdown recovery of the Gemini 5 space capsule off Florida August 29,1965, carrying Gordon Cooper and Charles Conrad. James was awarded the National Defense Medal, Vietnam service medal, Navy unit commendation medal & the Good Conduct Medal. When James left the Navy, he did some professional boxing & trained boxers. He fought in the middle weight class. He also worked as under water welder, building boats. He was also an iron worker in local 272. His hobbies were running on the beach, working out, watching movies. His biggest activity was church. He loved to go to church. He was a good Christian man. James was survived by 3 daughters, Tammy Gibavitch, Leslie Schmitt, & Staica Gibavitch. He had 7 grandchildren & 3 great grandchildren.

Victor was a great person, a true shipmate, and a considerate soul. His life was unjustly taken on 16October2012, and his murderer has been tried and judged guilty. He may no longer be with us, but in his young life on this earth he made a significant impact to remain in our memory.
