Shortly after the Civil War, the Grand Army of the Republic organization buried soldiers who had financial troubles in graves across the country.
And that includes many of the veterans buried in Section A of Rose Hill Cemetery.

2021 --Dec. 18 is National Wreaths Across America Day, and this is the perfect opportunity to not only serve our veterans but to serve as a family.
Monroe County History Center, volunteers identify unmarked burial plots of area veterans
Local volunteers are working hard to ensure all veterans laid to rest at Rose Hill and White Oak cemeteries are honored this December on National Wreaths Across America Day. This year, the ceremony will be on Saturday, Dec. 17.
The goal is to place a live, balsam fir veteran’s wreath at the headstone of every service member buried there and ensure no one is forgotten.

Like many memorial parks built in the 1800s, Bloomington’s Rose Hill Cemetery is a meditative space with meandering paths and open vistas. This year marks the park’s bicentennial, and Cory Hawkins, natural resource education specialist with the Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department, hopes more residents make a visit to Rose Hill.
