<i class="material-icons" data-template="memories-icon">account_balance</i><br/>Paul Heindel, Army<br/><div class='remember-wall-long-description'>Uncle Paul Heindel was a S/Sgt active in the Pacific Theatre, specifically as a member of the Company A 6Th Ranger Battalion serving in New Guinea, Philippines, and Luzon. He was part of the Ranger force that captured the strategic island of Dinagat, one of the islands protecting the Surigao Strait and the Leyte Gulf, the day before General MacArthur made his famous return to the Philippines. He originally started as a foot messenger between the front lines and commanding officers, but was eventually promoted to a non-commissioned officer in charge of ten infantry soldiers and their weapons. He was awarded 5 bronze stars for his service. Interestingly, his departure date from the Pacific to return to the States was on Christmas Day 1945. (You might recognize the 6th Rangers as the group that rescued the POWs from Cabanatuan. Yep, that was them, but the rescue was made by Company C, not Paul’s company, but many of his friends.) <i class="material-icons" data-template="memories-icon">account_balance</i><br/>Cearon Becker, Army<br/><div class='remember-wall-long-description'>Uncle Cearon S Becker was an Army corporal who participated in Operation Ivory Soap, also in the Pacific. Operation Ivory Soap’s mission was to repair damaged aircraft anywhere in the Pacific. Pilots with damaged planes often had to land wherever they could put down. So the mission of Ivory Soap was to bring repairs to them. The ships were essentially floating fully-equipped machine shops with the capability to repair most anything mechanical, including sheet metal fabrication. According to Uncle Cearon, they also made repairs on damaged ships when the occasion arose. Operation Ivory Soap, comprised of 24 ships and over 5,000 men, was kept "classified" for more than a half-century is not even mentioned in the official history book, "The Army Air Forces In World War II." Priebe, Marine Corps<br/><div class='remember-wall-long-description'>Cortney Priebe served in WWII with the US Marines. He was trained at Paris Island, and was the in combat with the anti artillery in Bougainville and Guadalcanal during the 2nd push. His grandson Justin Harttman followed with his service during the Middle East Conflict. <i class="material-icons" data-template="memories-icon">cloud</i><br/>CJ Smith, Army<br/><div class='remember-wall-long-description'>My Great Uncle C.J. Smith had the distinction of serving in both the European and Pacific Theatres of War. He arrived in France on May 8, 1945, the day Germany surrendered. I always told him the Army should have sent him sooner as the Germans must have realized it was hopeless now that he was there! He returned to the States shortly thereafter and was quickly transported to the Pacific where he learned while in transit that Japan had surrendered. Again, the enemy surrendered just as he was arriving! He served in the Occupation Forces in Japan. <i class="material-icons" data-template="memories-icon">stars</i><br/>Matthew Olphin, Army<br/><div class='remember-wall-long-description'>Matthew M. Olphin received a four-year Army ROTC scholarship to attend Penn State University. While at PSU, Matt was a member of the Army ROTC Ranger Team that competed against other teams from around the globe at West Point. In fact, he was a member of the 2013 PSU team that scored the most points ever by a USA team. He served with the Special Ops Forces, with tours-of–duty in Africa and Afghanistan. He received a Bronze Star for his role in eliminating a Taliban stronghold while rescuing 39 hostages. Miracously, none of Matt’s compatriots on this mission nor the hostages incurred any injuries during the mission! His photo was taken in Afghanistan shortly before Christmas 2018.
